Wine World Woes Continue in 2024
Global wine consumption continued to decline overall in 2024, and if estimates prove correct, would be the lowest the world has seen since 1961. The United States maintained its position as the world’s top wine market, however, it’s decline from the previous year continued.
Italy took over the top spot in global wine production in 2024, overtaking France which saw a significant decline in production from 2023. In fact, Italy was responsible for nearly 1/5th of the world’s production of wine in 2024. Overall, global wine production too was down to 1961 levels in 2024.
The global surface area devoted to vineyards in 2024 was also down from the previous year, and marks the fourth year in a row of this trend. The top three countries in the world in vineyard surface area all saw declines from 2023. For the United States, which ranks sixth in the world in vineyard surface area, 2024 marked the 11th year in a row of shrinking vineyard area.
