Wine Wisdom: Classification Cognition

Italy's Calabria Region Gets Its First DOCG!

The Classico subzone of the existing Cirò DOC was elevated to its own Cirò Classico DOCG, becoming Calabria’s very first DOCG. The DOCG classification is the highest and most restrictive in Italy, just above DOC. Cirò Classico is a dry, full-bodied red wine with fruit and spice notes. Must be aged three years. At least 90% of the wine must be from the Gaglioppo grape, with no more than 10% from Greco Nero and/or Magliocco. The separate Cirò DOC still exists, though without its previous subzone.
