U.S. Wine Production Down in 2024, Third Year in a Row
United States wine production in 2024 was nearly 648 million gallons (2.45 million hectoliters), a decline of just over 15% from 2023 and the third year in a row of declining U.S. wine production.
With respect to wine production in the U.S., it’s not an exaggeration to say “as California goes, so goes the nation.” California overwhelmingly dominates wine production year after year, accounting for 78.5% of the total U.S. wine produced by volume in 2024. In fact, this represents a decline of 1.9% from 2023 when California accounted for just over 80% of all wine produced in the U.S.
The top three wine producing U.S. states in 2023 remained ranked the top three in 2024, despite their negative trend. However, New York has displaced Washington at number two, now accounting for 4.3% of the U.S. total wine produced versus Washington’s now 4%.
Of the top producing U.S. states in 2024, Oregon realized the greatest positive trend from the previous year and remained unchallenged in its position as the nation’s number four wine producer.
